Before designing the kitchen interior space, you’ve probably heard of the kitchen triangle – a simple layout principle that helps work in the kitchen go smoothly and safely between the sink, stove and refrigerator. Hence, if you are planning to build a new kitchen, arranging the kitchen interior according to this principle will make housework and movement during cooking easier.
The principle of Golden triangle in kitchen design
The kitchen triangle is a term used in kitchen cabinet design, to determine an effective kitchen layout, in terms of both aesthetics and functionality.
Currently, there are the number of the kitchen design layout such as I, L, U shaped kitchen or kitchens with island, however, all of these designs need to comply the principle of the kitchen triangle.
To form an effective golden triangle in the kitchen, before designing the kitchen interior, the architect needs to carefully calculate the distance and layout of 3 practical locations including cooking area, washing area and storage area, and these need to be as close as possible to each other to create convenience while cooking, optimizing operations and movement in the kitchen area.

The kitchen triangle is formed when connecting 3 practical locations: cooking (hob/stove), washing (sink) and storing food (fridge)
How to design the kitchen work triangle?
To optimize kitchen space, when designing, it is necessary to ensure the kitchen triangle principle according to the following characteristics:
- Total length of all three sides ≥ 400m, or ≤ 790cm;
- All 3 sides of the triangle ≥ 120cm, or ≤ 270cm;
- Kitchen cabinets or other barriers should not block any side of the triangle by more than 30cm;
- The distance between the kitchen cabinet and the dining table and chairs or kitchen island is at least 120cm;
- The sink should have at least 60cm of usable space on each side;
- The area used for meal preparation should be located next to the sink and have a usable space of at least 90cm
- The cooking area has a minimum distance of 38cm. If placed near the washing area, the distance is at least 50cm to ensure feng shui elements.
- The distance from the kitchen counter to the refrigerator should not exceed 120cm.
- The location of the refrigerator must leave a maximum width of 65cm because current single-door refrigerators have a maximum width of 80cm. If using a 2-door cabinet, leave a space approx ~100cm wide;
- If possible, the main circulation flow in the house should not cross any side of the triangle;
- Tall obstacles such as kitchen cabinets and wall shelves must not block any two of these three points at the same time.
